Aquaponics is a synergy between Aquaculture and Hydroponic, before aquaponics that we know of today, water gardening is the typical form of plant with fish.
The water features, running water cascading on rock is the early form of bio-filter, now in aquaponics growth beds do this function.
These are picture of my water garden setup about 5 years ago, its small. There are few fishes like Blue Gourami and Guppies, they eat mosquito larvae. The water cascading down the center ceramic vase will convert the ammonia in the water to nutrient for the plant. This simple bio-filter also helps to keep algae at bay.
