Aquaculture Resource Centre

Many queries I received on where to get Tilapia fingerling, so decide to do some scouting at various places that I had known.

One of the place is ARC or Aquaculture Resource Centre that has been in operation since 2008. They are located at Lot, 1761, Jalan Kubu Gajah, Kampung Kubu Gajah, 47000 Sungai Buloh, Selangor.

Google Map : Here
Website : Here

ARC was set up by En. Mohd Hafiz Nordin and En. Hazarul Hafzam Mohd Zaki way back in 2008. Together they run the setup full time and En. Hafiz also assisted by his wife Pn. Farhana. During my recent visit did talk to them on Aquaponics and our requirements on tilapia or other fish fingerling.

They primarily do Tilapia and Cat fish either supplying already process catfish, or live tilapia. As mention by En. Hafiz they can supply tilapia fingerling to those that wanted this fish. However they need to be inform in advance so that it can be ready and stock at their facilities in Sungai Buluh and best to order around 100 or 200 fingerling at a time with self collect.

I do not enquire on the price, because I will leave it to those that wanted it deal directly with them for pricing.

ARC has been in the business for more that 10 years and their facilities is in Sg Buluh, Rawang and Sungai Lui.

Those that want tilapia please feel free to contact them at their website as earlier part of post.

Nine Top Trading

I had been looking for this place for quite sometime, the address and GPS location given on the net is misleading and send me in circles.  This fact is acknowledge by the shop owner as he heard numerous complains about it.
When there this afternoon and manage to get the Chelated Iron (FE) that I am looking for, what a relief and at last I got it right.
Nine Top is located at :

No. 8 Jalan Idaman 2
Taman Rawang Idaman, 48000 Rawang

Romatech Agro

Make a quick trip to Romatech Agro earlier today to get some Agriculture care product, what I am looking for most is Chelated Iron (Fe) to supplement my aquaponics. Unfortunately they don't stock Fe, but since I am there might as well get some other stuff that is useful for my Aquaponics.
Romatech Agro is a small cozy start up, that deal mostly on fertigation items ranging from pumps, tubes to supplement that needed to start a fertigation setup. They also carry few starter kit from Cili Bangi that specialize in fertigation cili plants.
I pick up few items, Calcium Boron, Seaweed Extract and Neem oil to supplement my Aquaponics plants. Calcium for plant tissue and fruit deformities, Seaweed Extract for nutrient and Neem Oil to get rid of pest.

Romatech Agro located at :

Lot 4663, Kampung Baru Batu 14
Jalan Puchong, 47100, Puchong.

Making Another Set To Test Out

LECA is costly so using it in large quantity is expensive. I will always try to make aquaponics either easier or cheaper to do, without sacrificing its reliability and functionality.
As usual nearest place for me is Selangor Green Lane in Shah Alam near Kota Damansara and spend almost two hours hopping from one place to another. Lot 56 above is just an example and there are many other places that do similar items.
What I am looking for is a plastic pot large large enough to turn into fish tank. Porcelain available but those are heavy and I already had one running as Ornamental set.
Big porcelain vase I'll keep my option open for these and may use it in future project, but for now a big plastic tub is what I am more interested of.
Closest thing I can find for this next set I'm making, it measures slightly more than two feet across on top and take up about four square feet of space. Water volume should be sufficient for the test that I'm going to do, but it has one major flaw.
It has holes !!! :( four of it, at the bottom for water drain because it is a flower pot. Well okay it's a huge flower pot, ideal for drip irrigation aquaponics.
I purchased one and will need to seal those holes. As a test unit for my Strawberry Project it's okay but for long term, I'll just have to find out. Making for others ? No way I'll use these, too much of a risk to take.
As a growbed these planter box will do nicely for the intended test I'm doing. I want to use rain gutter actually but they only sell them in 4 meter length, not viable for a test unit. This planter box is approximately the right size and almost the right depth too, so it will do.
Those two boxes will be place something like above for this set up. I hope the container below can take their weight. One box will be filled with LECA, the other I will use potted media base aquaponics growbed.  Both will use a siphon flood and drain, but I have not decide either to use one common master siphon or individual unit.

Using master siphon will reduce the pump size needed because effectively it will only require to trigger one siphon. Individual siphon will need a bigger pump, and more power required. I am testing a shorter version of the 20 mm StrainerBell which is suitable for a very low water height in the growbed.

Hydroton Revisited

Got myself three bags of Hydroton to try out, should be enough for one growbed.

I never try planting with hydroton, my last experiment with it make me hold on to trying it out. Finally today these three bags will be the Guinea Pig for my Hydroton Growbed. At RM 70.00 per bag its quite a sum to pay, RM 210.00 for these 3 and just enough for one growbed.

Update : 4 bag of 50 Lt is required for Growbed below.

If I use stones or chip pebbles will only set me back about RM 70.00 for 10 bag that enough for same size growbed. Well I need to try, one advantage of Hydroton is its light in weight so, don't need strong racking.

At the same time I bought another two growbed tub, that the 3 feet Guppy Tank. This is for my Hydroton bed and the other one I'll turn into a fish tank to be use with another smaller growbed to test few things.

Will see how it turn out.

Aquaponics Supplies

I got many query on where do I get my growbed media. This serve as to show where is it so that it would be easier for those that wanting to get same item.

These are for people staying in and around the Klang Valley area, other parts of the country I am not familiar with.

Note : I will update this page if I manage to get information on other places.

LECA (Hydroton)

Wellgrow Horticulture stock these and a 50 Liter bag cost RM 75.00 (2014 price).

Location of WellGRow horti is along Selangor Grean Lane Lot No 19.
GPS : 3.188508,101.578517

That's their sign board, and right opposite a Toyota Service Center.

Best to contact this guy for LECA.

STONES and PEBBLES

I go to Pebbles Concept House lot 48 along the same road, price range from RM 6 ~ 12 per bag of 20kg depending on grade. The RM 6.00 is the cheapest but it will do for Aquaponics. A 3 ft growbed that I use require 10 bags.

Their location is on the Selangor Green Lane and GPS : 3.166066,101.568239 for Google map.

GUPPY TANKS

There are few Lot doing Aquarium supplies too,

Dragon Aquatic Supplier at Lot 62 is one of them.

Those blue tub that I use goes for RM 110.00 for the 3 ft (growbed) tank and RM 250.00 for the 4ft (fish) tank..

TILAPIA FINGERLING

If you are in Klang Valley, there is a place in Subang New Village and Lot 62 of Selangor green lane where they do Tilapia. They sell each fingerling at RM 0.20.

Tilapia is a cheap fish not many place want to keep stock since they eat and require same attention as that of more expensive fish.

Below is their location

Some of the RM 0.25 Tilapia Fingerling, these cost more but after taking consideration of how far you need to travel to get a cheaper ones, this is a better option.
