Basic Aquaponics - Spinach Seedling Transplant

Spinach seedling transplant using the flooded growbed method to ensure they are not damaged.

The growth is not uniform, those too small will have to wait for a few more days.

Thanks for watching

Basic Aquaponics - Strawberry Propagation

Strawberry propagation using runners is widely done by home enthusiast. This is the easiest way to get few plants for your trials.

Directly to hydroton pots will ensure young strawberry plants starts early in the new medium. It will take root in a week and usually ready to be detache from the mother plant in about 30 to 40 days.

Thanks for watching

Basic Aquaponics - Sweet Basil Propagation

Sweet Basil or English Basil quite difficult to grow in the Equatorial heat, I'll try to propagate this from cuttings.

I had done many Thai Basil or Holy Basil without problem. Let see if this will survive the heat.

Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching

We'll see whether it is will grow or not.

Farmer's Market in Pekan Pahang

Farmer's market is a good place to look for plants and seeds. These market the sellers are small operator or farmers themself.

Herbs and medicinal plants are sold here. Some plants are rare and not easily obtainable in urban area.

Some plants are over price like these turmeric plant that goes for RM10 per bag whilst another seller listed same at RM5.

Fruit plants and even fig are available. Last year fig plant sold for RM80 per pot, this year price has drop to RM60. I guest once the hype of fig is over and more peopke know how easy to grow them, price will drop further.

More plants

Cili Bara from Indonesia, this plant is not for sale but more as a display to show the possibilities of growing at home.

Seedling are plenty at RM1.50 each or less if you buy more.

Apart from plants, vegetable and herb seed available. Organic pesticide is also available  for home use.

Ok, a post to test out Blogaway Pro.

Seedling For Aquaponics

Using seeds is a cost effective way of growing vegetable, they can be purchase online or safe keep for later usage.
However seeds can be difficult to start or in short, they fail to germinate.

Seeds like above can be purchase online and they do grow.
There will be time that seedling is a viable alternative, especially when you need plants urgently.

Above are few seedling that I purchase from time to time if I want to grow plants that needed quickly or for trials.
A word of caution: It is recommended that seedling only be grown in fully matured growbed.

Sweet Basil above is a surprise to me since this herb required colder temperature than what we have over here.

The seller assured me that this plant can survive the heat in the lowland. Will try out, but I may do dirt in pots first for this, then I'll transfer to aquaponics if it manage to grow.

I plant Thai Basil without problem from cuttings they grow really well in Aquaponics

Cili Bara, these is a variety from Indonesia, do grow in Aquaponics but require lots of nutrient to do well.

Above Cili Bara planted in pots at the Farmer's Market, it sure look very good.

Egg Plants seedlings, I had limited success with these on the traditional growbed. I will test these batch on the #gutterbed.

That's it on the seedling, just ensure growbed fully mature before planting seedlings.

Gandarusa Has To Go

This Gandarusa plant was requested by a friend for me to try out in aquaponics, I done flood and drain media base growbed and gutter growbed style and it do very well in both trial.

It is time to say goodbye to this plant in my aquaponics set, I'll grow it on dirt to keep as specimen, who knows I may need it one day.

So Gandarusa grow very well in aquaponics.

Dayak Onion

Dayak Onion, Bawang Bukit, Mala Bawang or Bawang Huma are among the names for this plant. Its scientific name is Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) Merr and it is a medicinal plant that is use by the Dayak tribe in Borneo.

Bought a handful from the day market in Pekan, Pahang sold by an Orang Asli from that area and I want to try and plant it in my Aquaponics set.

Few bulb planted in my gutter growbed,

and a few more in the ornamental set.

A few bulbs I planted in normal dirt, just to make sure if the aquaponics trial fail at least I still have few left to try again.

Various studies done on this plant on its medicinal properties. Traditionally used as diuretic, vermifuge, abortifacient, antifertility agent.

Sambung Nyawa Restocking

Sambung Nyawa plants has good medicinal properties hence I will always has it planted in my aquaponics set. One of the growbed I had to cleared up and replant tomatoes, in that I had to remove the existing plants and this include the Sambung Nyawa plants.
Took it out of the growbed, since I had it in pot it's easier to do.
Cut its branches and gave the Tilapia a treat.
In 24 hours those branches will be strip clean.
Those few remaining branches, cut the shoots for planting.
It's an easy plant to grow, stick it in hydroton is that is needed and plant it in a temporary area.
Two pots is all that is requires.
Temporarily placed amongst the newly planted tomatoes.
It will be transferred to larger pot once the plant has shown sign of growth.

Tomatoes Overdue

Sown few tomatoes from over ripen homegrown and it was overdue for transplanting. Decide to do that on my smaller set. So out goes the buffer plants and few tomatoes seedling to take over.
Due to the overdue period, the seedling are tall and thin. I had to plant it deep so that they can developed more root from the buried stem.
When you transplant tomatoes, the rule is "the deeper the better" because more roots can developed from stem in the soil resulting stronger plants.
In forty five days or less they should fruit.

Pandanus Maximus .. :)

Stick a few of these pandan cuttings few weeks ago just to get some plants in one of my smaller set for cycling. It is now time to replace the pandan (Buffer plants) with something more challenging.
They are very easy and a fast grower, less than four weeks and their roots system already going out of the pot.
Healthy root growth and will out grown its surrounding growbed in no time. If you intent to grow pandan in Aquaponics, do it in a square foot container and place it in the growbed.
The container must have drainage hole to get water and nutrient circulated then all will be fine.
