Pandanus Planting - In Aquaponics Potted Gutterbed

Pandanus leaves is use in many rice dishes in Southeast Asia, they are cultivated in kitchen garden and this video it's from my #gutterbed set.

Thanks for watching

Trimming Roots from pots in the #gutterbed

Root growth if not checked will clog #gutterbed. This is how I trim roots when needed.

You can see in the video, plant roots holding on to the conduit. This make the plant more stable even in small pots.

Video above shows how I scrape roots with knive. I do this for all plants from time to time.

Thanks for watching

Pandanus Minimus :)

I had done Pandan in aquaponics in a growbed without constrain and it is a difficult plant to contain. It's roots are very invasive and the plant itself will be vigourous which will colonize the entire growbed if not check.

Last year I tried using a large pot to make sure it does not spread.

This larger container do well in preventing it from spreading and at the same time making it more manageable.

With #SilosGrowbed style that I am currently experimenting, decide to try this invasive plant in one of the tubes.

Without testing we'll never know what's the outcome. Wanted to see how big it will grow and when it multiply how it is going to be contained within the Silos.

Will it be a pigmy pandan or large and spread out on it own ? The roots, will it spread out from bottom of the silo tubes ?

I'll be testing more plants as times goes and hope I'll learn something interesting.

Pandanus Maximus .. :)

Stick a few of these pandan cuttings few weeks ago just to get some plants in one of my smaller set for cycling. It is now time to replace the pandan (Buffer plants) with something more challenging.
They are very easy and a fast grower, less than four weeks and their roots system already going out of the pot.
Healthy root growth and will out grown its surrounding growbed in no time. If you intent to grow pandan in Aquaponics, do it in a square foot container and place it in the growbed.
The container must have drainage hole to get water and nutrient circulated then all will be fine.

Pandan Revisited

Did Pandan way back in 2010, this plant normally we will grow along the roads or in backyard in Kampung area. This plant can easily grown out of control and this was one of the main reason why I decided to pull it all out.
This time I am ready for it, I'll use pot to contain it within that boundary. We only need a small amount at a go and just one or two blade of the Pandan leaves is all that is needed for most of our cooking.
Select two small cluster for growing it in my aquaponics growbed. The smaller size is manageable and if I took a bigger plant it will be difficult to do in pot.
Trimmed most of the bigger bottom leaves and cut back those roots to get it into the pot. Since it's going to be in aquaponics it will not need that much root as a start. Let it regrow and bind all the LECA together as it grows.
Surplus old square container that I use to grow Rosemary is perfect for this task. It's the biggest I have for this job. LECA was from the Gandarusa project, three pots required for filling this square container.
In goes the pair and filled up with LECA to just able to get them straight. I will add more LECA as they grow.
Into the growbed as potted flood and drain, this arrangement the plant will not goes wild and colonized the entire growbed as it did few years back. Being in container it will be easily managed as needed.

Daun Pandan - Pandanus amaryllifolius

Daun Pandan - Pandanus amaryllifolius is a plant belong to the Pandan family. It is use widely in Southeast Asia cuisine as flavouring.

Growing it in Aquaponics do not require any special care due its naturally from the swamp anyway.
Young plants taken from clusters from nearby patch planted into Aquaponics growbed.
In no time these Pandan start to colonize the growbed, they have to be trimmed to a manageable size.
On an average household one single plant is enough and can be grown in a growbed.
