Seedling Doing Great

Seeds that I sowed as in the video earlier germinate after about 4 days, today the 8th day its growing.

Kale above after 8 day and looking good. I'll transplant three to a pot once they are about 3 to 4 inches high.

Tomatoes,  these I'll wait until about 6 inches high or once they have about 4 to 5 leaves. The most two to a pot. Tomatoes will require staking otherwise they will be damage by wind.

Not sure what variety these tomatoes, Cherry tomatoes is a better variety to grow for household consumption.

Spinach above, surprisingly slow. This is the red leaves variety and as previously grown in my traditional growbed. This is my first trial in the #gutterbed.

Ok, will post about these again once I do the transplant.

Farmer's Market in Pekan Pahang

Farmer's market is a good place to look for plants and seeds. These market the sellers are small operator or farmers themself.

Herbs and medicinal plants are sold here. Some plants are rare and not easily obtainable in urban area.

Some plants are over price like these turmeric plant that goes for RM10 per bag whilst another seller listed same at RM5.

Fruit plants and even fig are available. Last year fig plant sold for RM80 per pot, this year price has drop to RM60. I guest once the hype of fig is over and more peopke know how easy to grow them, price will drop further.

More plants

Cili Bara from Indonesia, this plant is not for sale but more as a display to show the possibilities of growing at home.

Seedling are plenty at RM1.50 each or less if you buy more.

Apart from plants, vegetable and herb seed available. Organic pesticide is also available  for home use.

Ok, a post to test out Blogaway Pro.

Seeds For Aquaponics

Many reader had asked how do I sow seeds, where to buy them and what brand.
There are many brand available, I had tried from those self package sundry shops to retail package from big specialise distributor.

This seeds from self package shops that sell in small package. They germinate no problem.

These packets from ACE hardware and other supermarkets. They will grow but don't keep it too long.

Green World seeds, they are a big distributor specilizing on seeds. I had good success rate on these and only brand that I can safely recommend.
However, like any seeds if it was kept for too long after the package been open the chances to germinate will be less.

There are simple instruction on the back, they have online purchase at www.gwgenetics.com the price on average at USD 1.00 per packet excluding shipping & handling.

You can check them out at : http://www.gwgenetics.com

Cherry Tomatoes - Seeds Collecting

Check Here : Cherry Tomatoes Sprouting

The festive season is back and I was in my wife home town about 300km from Kuala Lumpur. Its on East Coast of the Peninsular where life is simple and easy.

In the backyard of my in law's place there are few bunch of Cherry Tomato plant teaming with tomatoes
Pick a few tomatoes, the red ones thinking of using it for my Aquaponics set.
Plenty more where that came from.
Pick about a dozen for their seeds.
and squeeze them over a newspaper for drying, wax paper is ideal but I don't have any at the time.
Once all done, put it in the sun to dry, but not over dry.
After about an hour under the sun, they are dry and I scrape them off the newspaper. Plenty of seeds. If they are left in the sun longer they may dry out completely and be a bit brittle and easily break during scrapping.
Then fold the newspaper with the seeds inside and dry it again, this time they are "protected" by the newspaper and slowly dry.
I'll sow these seed on my growbed next.

Seeds

Line up of seed that I need to try out or have tried before. I'm going to try Chili again, this time I will do it differently.

I will use sowing tray, to ensure better success of seed germination. Previously I sow directly to grow bed this is ok if the seeds are big or freely available.

The sowing tray have many small compartment for soil or compost as growth media for the seeds. This one tray can be use for many different type of plants simultaneously.

Okra Seeds

Okra seeds are costly as a home gardener, seeds from one okra is about RM 2.99 that about USD 0.70.
Okra I planted few of the fruits I let it ripen and use as seed for next batch of Okra. I've put aside 6 okra and this is the result.
Those seeds are from one Okra, and the remaining 5 can be use some other time. Its more then I able to use within this one year period.
Its feel good to be able to produce seed for own usage, its a way towards self sustainable food production. On a smaller scale that is.

Aquaponics - Seeds

Fresh seed for my grow beds, Chillies (those small super hot), Lettuce , Chinese Chives and Chinese Celery.

I normally sprinkle those seed direct onto grow beds, may try to do differently with these. Chilies I have tried, lettuce and Celery did before but nothing to be proud off, Chives is something new to me with Aquaponics.

I'm testing out various plants that can be grown, since our climate here differ from other area. Not much documented on equatorial region Aquaponics, this give me the chance to help others in this region. Some of those that successfully grow in Australia or the United States may not be able to be grown here.

I wish they have Equatorial Strawberry... :(

After that last pump incident nothing much else to do, the setup doing fine. I'm going fishing again later this afternoon and hope to get myself few more Tilapia for the tank.

Cheers.
